A road much travelled
Forton Services. It will always be Forton, even though it is now officially called "Lancaster Services"
Built in 1964, it was the first service area to open on Britain's first stretch of Motorway - The preston by pass.
We pass this a lot on our way to and from my parents home.
Because it was almost half way between London and Edinburgh, the owners Rank (also of film making fame) decided to add this tower to the north bound side.
It had two floors of restaurants at the top - one of them outdoor with spectacular views from all angles.
In the late 1990's I worked here as a Forecourt Manager (not my greatest career move I might add!) and I got the opportunity to go up the tower on a fairly regular basis. Some of the original 1960's decor was still there, but most of it was wasted space.
The only way up and down is a lift so I guess Fire Regulations prohibit its re-opening to the public. Though I am sure a way can be found to meet the regulations with a bit of thought.
The present owners, Moto, painted the panels in their corporate colour and to my mind they have not enhanced it by doing so.
The title "A road much travelled" could apply just as well to The Queen, who addressed both Houses of Parliament today as part of Her Diamond Jubilee Celebrations. Conrgratulations Ma'am.
