Peace
Rather than photograph a complete stranger I thought I'd take advantage of the assignment and approach Brian Haws for a portrait.
I've read about him often. For those who don't know him he's a peace protester who has camped opposite the Houses of Parliament since 2nd June 2001, protesting chiefly against the Iraq War and role of the UK government in it. I've often walked past the site on my London walks, so approached him today and duly asked permission. He was a little reticent and gruff, and insisted on not posing, but in the end sat there for a few shots. I chatted instead with 'Bunny', an old chap who keeps Brian company 2 days a week, and who gladly told me the stories of the numerous battles the government and police have waged to have them all removed.
Regardless of whether you agree with the politics, you have to admire the resolve of someone who believes so much in something that this is now their life. Sobering stuff.
