Inspired by the Quaker Tapestry
I worked this embroidery from a kit sold by the Quaker Tapestry at Kendal. It is an interpretation of a detail on one of the 77 panels celebrating Quaker experiences. It illustrates a development of Quakerism in the late nineteenth century when some younger members complained that they wanted a more liberal outlook. Social attitudes were changing and inventions such as the Rover Safety bicycle had led to a greater freedom, especially for women.
The Quaker Tapestry Panels are brimming over with fascinating details and insights into the influence Quakers have had in the everyday lives of people in Britain and all over the world. The exhibition re-opened to the public last Monday. Adrian and I are volunteer stewards and it is lovely to see other people inspired, as we are, by this unique exhibition. Don't miss it, if you find yourselves near the Lakes.
