North Head, Auckland
Holiday backlip- New Zealand- Day 1
We were staying with and travelling with our friends Matt and Jenny for most of our holiday and today Jenny took the day off work and took us down to Devonport and North Head. The boys played on the little beach in Devonport which had great views of the city from (it's on the opposit side of the harbour to central Auckland). Then we went up to North Head which as you can see also has great views of the city. The boys enjoyed running around and exploring some of the tunnels which were built in the late 1800's and early 1900's for coastal defence.
Wikipedia says: "North Head (or Maungauika, the Mountain of Uika in M?ori) is a volcanic cone forming a headland within North Shore City, New Zealand, in the suburb of Devonport at the east end of the Waitemata Harbour (Auckland's harbour).
It is a public reserve (part of the Hauraki Gulf Maritime Park) known for its sweeping views over the harbour and the Hauraki Gulf. During the last century it was mainly used by the military for coastal defense installation, which left a network of accessible old bunkers and tunnels as its legacy, forming part of the attraction."
