The destroyer
About ten years ago I went to a track session at Blackpool.
It was Februry. It was cold, wet and an icy gale was blowing. It was horrible.
There was a young girl pushing a wheelchair round track doing 400m splits. The name is Shelly Woods
Her brother was on the track side. His job was to ride his bike behind her after the session so she got home safely.
I agreed with couple of others to run London for Shelly. We raised a few bob for her and she promptly blew the lot on ONE item. Typical woman - give her money and she will go shopping!
But we allowed to spend - it was a new wheelchair.
Ten years ago I said Shelly had a smile that would power the National Grid. Nothing has changed since.
I watched her race on her Mum's TV in Beijjing and I have seen her win The Great North Run on two occasions.
Shelly thinks I'm her loudest supporter. I'm not so sure about that but I'm probably in the top 1!
I've been impressed with the British runners this morning as they chase Olympic qualifying times.
David Weir pushed an excellent men's wheelchair race to win in the last 300 metres.
But Shelly took it on from half way today and won by over 3 minutes (I reckon the distance is about a mile!)
She has destroyed the rest of the field today.
She will be pleased. I am filling up as I write this.
Best of all, Shelly will put it down as a job done oday and will be back orking extremely hard tomorrow as she prepares for The Paralympics.
