Carp Banner

As well as displaying samurai dolls in the run up to Boys Day, Japanese families also fly a carp banner outside of their home if there is a boy in the family. The carp symbolises strength because it swims upstream and becomes a dragon in Heaven if it reaches the source of the stream at the mountain's summit.
