Aperture on Life

Weevil

My little friend this evening is a tiny little Red Rumex Weevil, Apion frumentarium. He really is tiny, this one is about 2.5mm and could grow to about 4mm.

They live on dock leaves and can be found between April and June. If you look on the underside of the leaves you may find them. They generally have a communal meal on one leaf and them go off to their individual leaves. They are harmless little creatures and, for a weevil, are very cute!

I'm afraid as the days warm there will be more little creatures around for me to show you. Not all of them, this one included, have a particularly fantastic lifestyle to write about, or tales about them from our folklore or medicine.

Are you beginning to realise that I have a crazy passion for creepy crawlies?!
