from where I am today

1st Pub

Near the East end of Rose Street, the Abbotsford is a fine example of a traditional Scottish island bar. The bar was fitted when the pub opened in 1902 to a design by the famed pub and brewery architect, Peter Lyle Henderson. There is a restaurant upstairs and diners can order beer which is brought up from the bar below.

The comfortable and traditional feel is enhanced by the wood panelling which extends part way up the walls, and if ever anyone produces a "good pub ceiling guide" to Edinburgh's pubs, the Abbotsford will certainly feature. Seating is available either side of the central bar or at the ends of the pub.

If I get the opportunity I will blip the bar and ceiling.

The Abbotsford was built for Charles Jenner, apparently so that those working in the nearby department store that bears his name would be likely to spend their money in his magnificent pub.
