What is normal sleep?
Today, I went to a talk with the author of the book 'Helping your Baby to Sleep'. It was really interesting, but most importantly, I was reassured that I am doing the right thing. For the last 3 nights, Mia has been awake for around 3 hours at a time. She was feeding and as soon as I put her down, she wanted to feed again. And again. I obliged, whereas Jake tends to think that I may be conditioning her and she is manipulating me. According to the author, you cannot condition a baby and fear it will always need it. She thinks it's a developmental stage that they will outgrow. The organiser of the talk explained to me that it may well be that, because Mia is a premature baby, she is not strong enough to get the 'real' milk with the first feed but just the fore milk, which is not as nutritious and filling for that long. So she feeds again straight away. I just need to keep doing what I'm doing until she is old enough. Then I read that most babies up to 6 weeks old only fall asleep on the breast. Another point against the conditioning theory. And last, my midwife rang and when I told her about it she said I just need to get through the first 6 weeks. So, in summary I will still be up for long stretches, but I know that this is alright.
By the way, the midwife (Austrian Susanne) rang to let me know that Mia's due date has been calculated correctly. There was some speculation that it was incorrect because she did so well for 34 weeks. I guess that means she is just impatient (like Jake said 'like her mum) and strong-willed ;)
