Migrating birds
Sunday
Had a great bike ride this afternoon. It was a beautiful afternoon and we felt like a change from our usual Little Miami trail, so we drove up towards Dayton and cycled on the Great Miami trail. We started near Carillon Park and initially cycled north for a couple of miles, but then we came across a sign saying the bikeway was closed, although there wasn't an obvious reason why. So we turned around and headed south. The trail generally runs fairly close to the river, often running along the top of the levee. Birds were much in evidence everywhere - we saw several herons, these birds on the wires and loads of Canada geese, sunbathing on a bank in the river, grazing on grassy areas, and later quite a number of them on a patch of water, all swimming in the same direction toward the same bank in the late afternoon sun - quite a picture! Also on our way back, there were huge flocks of migrating birds - in the air and alighting on tree tops and in fields, and making quite a racket!
