Sacrilege
A long and lovely day today starting with an early morning wake up call (6.40) from my two little ones who were keen to get going!.
We stopped after the first stint of the journey, for a breakfast of champions with my parents and then headed onwards to Glasgow with only the slightest of sibling squabbles taking place in the back seat (during which, it has to be said, the older one was incredibly gracious when the little one, having had more than his fair share of listening choices, continually yelled over the top of the newly chosen audiobook).
A lovely lunch and family catch up later (the newest cousin is very cute and has grown so much!) and we headed out to Glasgow Green, where I had heard there was true to scale replica of Stonehenge - made as a bouncy castle.
Sacrilege is the work of artist Jeremy Deller who created the monument as a "way for people - not just kids - to enjoy a historical monument that is supposed to be revered". He says "It's comedic, it's absurd." It certainly was.
Up to 100 people are allowed on at any one time, which in itself gives you an idea of the scale, and it was amazing to watch all ages running, bouncing, jumping and somersaulting their way around. You can't help but smile, laugh and yelp with joy as you run and bounce and fall ungracefully. Multiply this experience by everyone on at the same time and the experience truly is comical and absurd in equal measure.
During our two 15 minute shots bouncing around I witnessed a girl, all of about 8, doing the most impressive somersaults I have seen outside of olympic gymnastics; a very small boy dressed as superman running wild; a newly married couple in complete wedding attire jumping with glee and a mature lady, sitting on the base, leaning against an upright stone completely engrossed in her mobile phone.
As it is part of GI, Glasgow's art festival the installation finishes on Monday, but if you are in London during the time of the olympic London 2012 Festival, find it, kick off your shoes and get bouncing!
