Liberation Day

During World War 2 the Channel Islands were the only part of Great Britain to be occupied by the Germans (so I believe but sorry if I am wrong). 67 years ago today the islands were liberated. In Guernsey today is a Bank Holiday with special services at church, to reflect and be thankful, and then lots of good fun in town. The car parks on the piers have lots going on, there are parades, competitions and fair rides as well as lots of lovely local products.

This is St Saviour's church tower. During the war it was used as a look out with gaurds stationed at the top. Extensive tunnels were built under the church as a safe place to store munitions (as the Germans thought the Brits world never bomb a church) and the rectory where we live was occupied and German officers moved in.

The Guernsey flag is flown on special occassions.

Mark and the children might go into town later with Nan to see what is going on if the rain holds off. This is my view of liberation day as I am not up to town yet, but I think its a great view.
