Blackwater cemetery
A very stormy night with the wind roaring through the trees - fortunately the tent was sheltered from the worst of it and it stayed dry until after breakfast.
As the forecast was not good we decided to walk from Kinlochleven to the Balckwater dam, which was a good choice as the cloud got lower, it was still windy and the weather was showers interspersed with rain.
The Blackwater dam was built between 1906 & 1909 to provide water for the aluminium smelter at Kinlocleven. It is the longest dam in the Highlands - 914m long - and was built entirely by hand. It is situated about 1000ft above the town and there are 6km of culvert and then more km of 6 parallel cast iron pipes down to the power station.
The workers who built it, many Irish, lived on the site in tents or crowded basic huts and lead an extremely hard life. They weren't reknowned for their sobriety - they often walked 3 or 4 miles over the mountains to the Kingshouse Inn in Glencoe at night and some were never seen again.
Others died on the job and about 20 are buried in this little cemetery just near the dam. Each has a concrete headstone with their name, except for 1 that just says "Unknown". There is also one for a Mrs Reilly, who may have been a cook.
It is a wild spot for people who lived wild lives, but someone has planted a few daffodils which are valiently struggling with the elements.
P.S. Excuse the rain spots
