Rock & Roll ain't noise pollution
Firstly I must lay out my credentials (Oooer missus!). In 1975 I saw the Who at the Kings Hall, Belle Vue. In the same year I saw Queen for the first time at the Free Trade Hall in Manchester; I saw them about five times in all. I saw Billy Joel at the Olympiahalle in Munich the year the wall came down and I saw Alice Cooper at the Apollo in Manchester (and went backstage) in 2000. I've seen any number of other bands, big and small, over the years - Thin Lizzy, Be Bop Deluxe, Snafu, SAHB, and on and on. Growing up in a big city I was able to go to gigs all over the place; I have rock credentials.
I rarely go to gigs now because I am old and don't deal well with loud noises but today was a lovely exception. A friend was playing at The Forum in Royal Tunbridge Wells at lunchtime so I went along.
I arrived early and caught the acts before the break. They were all youngsters and very adept with their instruments but however well someone wields an axe - and some of them were brilliant - songs like "Are you gonna be my girl?" need the singer to have experienced heartache and puberty to sound credible.
My friend's band were first on after the break and the audience seemed to enjoy the shift up from kiddlies to adults; the place rocked.
And then we went and had a cup of tea because however rock & roll one's lifestyle it was still a Sunday afternoon and one has standards.
This is the rock & roll toilet in the Gents - I really am a rebel.
