This sign in Cairns Street advertises the local market set up by residents. I particularly like the welcoming "Games Please" notice at its side.

Granby Street used to be an important shopping centre. Several Asian shops (including Matta's), Halal butchers, a Somali milkman named Abdi Saleh, who also had a corner shop, a Caribbean drink store, a Polish deli Welinsky's, a fishmonger Harold Warburton who used to spend his summer holidays fishing off the west coast of Scotland, and a Housing Aid Centre, where I used to work.

It is now far from the vibrant shopping centre that it used to be, but it must be the only street in the UK to have two Somali Community Centres.
