For twenty years we've fed and watered the troops on Christmas Day, but we were down to four this year. So instead of looking at the empty seats round the table and getting maudlin, we booked a restaurant. There were definite advantages. No washing up, no lingering smell of brussels sprouts, and no need to think of increasingly inventive ways of using up leftover turkey for the next fortnight.
