Learning Traditions

La Noche de Rabanos  (Night of Radishes) is a marvelous and uniquely Oaxacan event that takes place every 23 December. Artists of every age carve amazing creatures, people, animals, and architecture and then create entire scenes that depict various aspects of life in Oaxaca. A special area is set aside for young people, so they can hone their carving skills.
Special giant, non-edible radishes are grown only for this event. The imagination and artistic skill of the people who sculpt fantastic figures from the weirdly shaped radishes is truly incredible.
