Carol: Rosie & Mr. Fun

Sat., 12/27/2014 The Drive to the Central Coast

We reached a major turning-point this autumn when Mr. Fun relinquished the steering wheel to me. Never in our almost 50 years of marriage would he allow me to do any of the driving when we've been on vacation or going any distance that might have been helped by the assistance of two drivers.

So in September when we had a not so fun drive to the Central Coast because Max, our male pooch, was misbehaving and Mr. Fun would not stop to take care of the problem, I was more than fed-up. Traveling in a car has always been a difficult experience for the two of us. I think he is rude on the road and likes to be "Ricky Racer," and I do not appreciate his behavior.

Anyway, the first weekend in October we were scheduled to be at the Central Coast. Mr. Fun notified me that Thursday morning before I left for work that he didn't want to go to the Central Coast that afternoon. I said, "Okay," and then when I returned from school mid-day, I packed my car with my three dogs and headed to the Central Coast. I didn't ask his permission; I just left.

The next Monday, Mr. Fun had the opportunity to catch a ride north with our son-in-law, John, who was headed to the San Francisco Bay area to do some work. I had decided that I was going to take Tuesday out of the classroom and probably Thursday. So Mr. Fun joined me for the remainder of the week. The following Monday when we headed south, I told Mr. Fun he had the privilege of "riding" home with me, but he would not be driving. During the ride home, he was amazed at how pleasant it was to ride and watch the scenery.

From that moment on, he has allowed me to either do all the driving or at least some of the driving. He is much better at navigating and/or being the DJ than I am. And, if I do say so myself, I am much better at driving because I really don't care about traffic. He hates traffic.

So as we drove north today to the Central Coast, I drove part of the way and that explains the photo.

Good night from the Central Coast,

Rosie (& Mr. Fun), aka Carol
