An Extra Candle
It was September when Mum last went to church, just before Dad first experienced problems with his breathing. Although Dad was able to take Communion with the hospital chaplains during his illness, Mum had been unable to do so for three months. Today my sister Susan arrived in Tiptree early, and the three of us attended the Thursday morning service at St Luke's. It was good to see Mum being enfolded in the arms of her church friends, and I also felt nurtured by being there in the same seats where my parents have worshipped for ten years. The Thursday service at St Luke's is simple, no hymns are sung. Its understated nature seemed somehow appropriate for remembering Dad, who was himself an understated and quiet man with a strong faith.
We lit three votive candles today. One for Kaye, one for Auntie Joyce, and now an extra one for Dad.
