Happy birthday

One hundred years ago, an unassuming ship of war slipped into the Elbe from the Blohm & Voss shipyard. The B-98 was commissioned two months later.

It saw action, and lost crew, in the Baltic and at Jutland before acting as the mail ship servicing the interned High Seas Fleet at Scapa Flow. It was boarded and seized shortly after the grand scuttle.

Destined to serve in a foreign navy, she slipped her towing line and came to rest a mile from my door on the beach at Bay of Lopness, where it rests to this day.

The ship that scuttled itself.
