Gilbert's Lake

A cold, misty and murky afternoon stroll through the woods at Harrow Weald Common led us to Gilbert's Lake close to what is now the Grim's Dyke Hotel. At one time it was the home of W. S. Gilbert of Gilbert & Sullivan fame. Gilbert himself drowned in this very lake in May 1911, whilst attempting to rescue a girl who had been swimming when she got into difficulty.
