Reverse Loop Magic
So today I got my first DCC reverse loop board programmed. I was a little thick and needed some assistance from the manufacturer but it works perfect now. A critical part. The green board reverses the polarity in a reverse loop. Picture a loop at the end of a string. The train enters the loop on one side, goes around the loop, and then returns to the string through a switch. The problem is that the polarity is switched. Say the polarity in the string is + on the right and - on the left. Follow the + around the loop and when it rejoins the string it meets a - polarity. This will short the DCC system and everything stops. Also - you have to turn the switch so that the train can continue onto the string or leg. This little green board does some magic in my opinion. As soon as the first locomotive wheel touches the change in polarity at the switch, it instantly reverses the polarity in the loop so that the polarity matches and the train continues. It does this so fast that there is no short and the DCC protection circuit breaker does not cut out power. Also, it turns the switch to align with the loop. All without touching a thing. Magic. This allows the train to go back down the track in the opposite direction.
The nice part of this story is the support of the manufacturer, DCC Specialities. Through emails, they guided my through the process. The unit came with directions but I did a few steps wrong and then was circling the drain until they pulled me out. No fuss no muss. Immediate response to an email. No wonder they are considered the best.
