Far-away places with strange- sounding names

Mono Monday : Distant

When it comes to far-away places, New Zealand must be one of the furthest from England.
As for strange-sounding names, can any Kiwi tell me the meaning of Hokitika ? I bought this little kiwi from the glass studio there, a few years ago. It stands on a shelf in my bookcase, a reminder of distant places that I hope to see again one day.
