Childer's Cove

Australia 2013 Backblip #16

Got up, and made ourselves breakfast from cereal we brought with us and milk provided in the fridge. We then drove out to Loch Ard Gorge were we took some great pictures of the crashing waves and rock pillars from a couple of different locations. We then went down onto a beach, but soon the heavens opened and it rained. And rained. We finally got back to the car drenched!

The rain soon cleared, and we drove back up to the 12 Apostles visitors centre to see what they had on offer. Answer - nothing, just a cafe! So we took a couple more pictures of them in daylight and then drove back to Port Campbell where we bought lunch.

We tried to eat it at a lookout just above Port Campbell, but there was nowhere to sit so we drove on a bit and ate lunch sat on a rock looking at the sea near The Arch. This is a rock formation of an arch and the waves can be seen crashing underneath.

From The Arch we drove on to the next viewpoint - London Bridge. It's not a really a bridge any more, one arch now having collapsed into the sea.

Our next viewpoint was The Grotto, where you can see crashing waves through a hole in the rock, with a calm pool in the foreground.

We then stopped at the Bay Of Islands, and took yet more pictures of strong seas. We could have spent hours at any of these locations, watching the way the waves broke against the rocks and trying to work out when there would be a large one!

From there we drove onto Childer's Cove which we seemed to have to ourselves. There was very little beach left and the tide was coming in, but we still managed a few pictures of the rocks in the bay (including the blip). We did spend some time here trying to predict when the waves would reach all the way up the beach - chaos theory and physics in action! Sharon nearly got caught by one of them.

That was our last lookout of the day, and we then drove to Port Fairy with a brief stop to fill up the car with petrol.
