Prospecting

The kuaka were on the beach again this morning. A group flew past me as a I ran along Erceg's Way, waiting for the sun to rise. I took a couple of photos with the sun rising over the Hauraki Gulf beyond Kawau Island, and the kuaka (as many of the 41 as I could get in the frame) along the water's edge in the foreground.

I then saw the possibilities offered by a close up of those kuaka standing in the sun trail on the water. This was the pick of the photos for both S and me.

I doubt that there is any significant gold in that water. The iron sands are on the west coast, not here on the east. The kuaka would have no interest in metals anyway. They were prospecting for food.

However, they were occupying a piece of the foreshore which at this time of a morning when the tide is about an hour past high tide, is frequented by the gulls. They began to arrive. They landed close to the kuaka, and it looked to this observer as if the gulls were herding them. They bunched up.

Abruptly a gull dived at them, and half of the kuaka took wing. Shortly after a dog being walked by its owner ran at the remainder, and they departed rapidly. Less quickly than the kuaka, I also departed, and headed home, via the service station for the Saturday newspaper.

Back to the city this afternoon. Tsuken and Mrs T are having a night out and we are having the grandchildren to stay in the apartment. Right now I am heading out to get fish and chips, and also collect Jesafly to join us.
