Travelling Home
Australia 2013 Backblip #23
We got to the airport about 1:30pm in time for our 4:30pm flight.
Melbourne to Dubai was a 13 hour flight and we found out as we boarded that it was in fact the inaugural flight on this route. We were seen off by fire trucks spraying water at the plane during our journey to the runway as an honour, and we were also given small bottles of champagne and postcards to celebrate the new route. We flew west and over Perth before turning north west.
We landed in Dubai as the first scheduled Qantas A380, with the flight from Sydney close behind. The crew were given a round of applause by the passengers for being first. We were going to bring the champagne home, but unfortunately had to give them up at security in Dubai. I'm not sure why some airports put you through security when all you are doing is getting off a plane while it refuels and then getting back on it again!
We watched a variety of films/tv on the way back including Top Gear and Come Fly With Me.
We had a seven hour flight from Dubai to London Heathrow which left about an hour late, mainly due to delays in a security check performed on the aircraft. We landed about 6am and then took the tube out to Kings Cross. At the station we retrieved more warm clothing from our cases (it was about two degrees) and then had a quick breakfast of bacon sarnie and porridge. Then we boarded our train up to Wakefield.
Once at Wakefield we took a taxi home, and had fun spotting the snow still left from the deep drifts that occurred up here while we were away.
