William Humphrey - Career Criminal

Whilst researching local and family history, I came upon one William Humphrey who received 1 months hard labour in 1852 at Bedford Gaol.

His crime? Stealing turnip tops.

Did he learn his lesson? It appears not as he is a repeat offender and although he did branch out a little, he did seem to have a penchant for turnip tops, getting caught on several occasions.

Is he related? I don't think so, but I have no issue if he is. Looking at the records, he was poor, struggling to exist and did what he had to in a time when society provided little to no help.

And spare a thought for poor Sarah Humphrey who was sentenced to 1 years hard labour in 1815 for bastardy which seems a tad harsh.
