Moret sur Loing

Saturday
Having had several late nights and early mornings in the latter part of this week, we treated ourselves to a lie-in this morning. The forecast had been for freezing rain overnight and into the morning, but clearing in the afternoon. Roger's car was indeed covered in ice, with a light dusting of snow, when we got up, but by about noon the skies had totally cleared and it was a clear blue sky, so we took Laura to Moret sur Loing for the afternoon. We had lunch at a lovely crêpe place at the end of the bridge over the River Loing, then went for a walk around the town, and along the river. My blip is of the Maison Paul-Louis Weiller. This house is on an island of the Loing, on the site of Provencher mill rebuilt in 1880. The painter, Alfred Sisley, who lived in Moret, has reproduced this mill many times, including the gallery that connected it to the bridge. The mill was destroyed in August 1944, when retreating German troops destroyed an arch of the bridge, and the mill ruins were later purchased by the manufacturer Paul-Louis Weiller, engineer, pioneer of the aviation industry and a member of the Institute.
