RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch
In our chosen hour we had a Greater Spotted Woodpecker, bullfinch, chaffinch, great tits, blue tits, coal tits, tree sparrows, robins, black birds, dunnocks, collared doves, and a pheasant join the party. We had a 'no show' from the house sparrows, wrens, thrushes and a few other regulars. A buzzard and a magpie swooped in a few hours later but 'you snooze, you lose' the count was in.
This very clever woodpecker picks a pincone and wedges it into a crack in the telegraph pole to make seed extraction easier. He lifts and turns it until it is empty, flings it to the ground and flies off for another! I could watch him all day, though it will take me a while to lift the hundreds of cones he has tossed on the lawn below!
Unfortunately, being such a dull day the colours aren't very exciting but I wanted to have record of this somewhere.
