Yacht Racing Trophies
The Royal Southampton Yacht Club has one of the most comprehensive programmes of year-round fully crewed yacht racing of any Solent yacht club and successes of the past year were celebrated at the Ocean Village clubhouse with a glittering prizegiving.
All fully crewed races are open to both members and non-members alike and many are dual scored for both IRC and Club rated boats.
Many of the events are run on Southampton Water near to the Ocean Village clubhouse and provide challenging and competitive racing yet without the “Solent chop.”
Prizes were presented by paralympic gold medal sailor, and one time YJA Yachtsman of the Year, Andy Cassell. Although disabled from birth, he is a champion of sailing for the disabled and is founder of the Andy Cassell sailing Foundation, based at Cowes, encouraging disabled yachtsmen and women to compete on the water.
Trophies awarded included Club prizes awarded during Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week last August, where the Club is responsible for organising and managing the first day’s racing, and is part of the triumvirate which organised racing on the first three days of the regatta.
The trophies included the club’s prized Queens’ Cup won at Cowes by Lord Irvine Laidlaw and received on his behalf by the Commodore, Gordon Agnew.
The awards were introduced by Captain of Racing Richard House, assisted by Sailing Secretary, Cathy Crawley.
