Choice Market

Bright blue skies, the occasional swirl of cloud and sunshine. But it was bitterly cold at Romsey Farmers’ Market today.
It is the first Sunday of the month, the regular date for the market, and I wouldn’t miss it; yet today I was staying no longer than was necessary.
The markets always have something of a friendly atmosphere, and whenever I can I am delighted to support the local producers and growers.
Hampshire Fare has been working with local farmers and producers across the county for more than 20 years. Like me, the organisation is passionate about encouraging us to buy locally and goes out of its way to encourage regulars like me to support what is regarded as a unique and talented produce and craft communities.
I guess the same goes for farmer’s markets and local produce communities around the country, though naturally the one local to me is close to my heart.
My needs today were limited — fresh free range eggs, freshly baked bread and indulged myself with a lardy cake. Oh yes, and of course, a bag full of live winkles. One of my favourites!
Bitterly cold or not, I always this this market provides a fantastic choice of top quality, seasonal, great value food, all grown, reared, caught, brewed, pickled, baked or processed within Hampshire or ten miles of the border.

Meanwhile, the winkles are cooked, dressed with olive oil and vinegar, and now with pin in hand this evening, I’m making a meal of them!
