Couple sculpture
Today we drove 15 miles north of Newcastle to the coastal town of Newbiggin-by-the-sea. I've never visited before (because we really are spoilt for choice with our coastline!). However, I was keen to see a sculpture that I'd heard about. This is "Couple", a large bronze and steel sculpture of a couple looking out to sea, standing 300 metres off the coast of Newbiggin beach. It was put their in 2007 but I had not heard about it previously. From the beach the couple look life sized but they are actually 5 metres tall. This interesting website (http://www.newbigginbay.co.uk/art.html) shows a photograph of them alongside artist Sean Henry.
It was chilly but lovely and sunny on the beach and it was great to spend another day by the sea. We gathered together lots of pretty spiral shaped shells and I also took some photographs of the birds on the beach (but decided to blip the couple since that was the reason for my trip). We warmed up with a hot coffee and slice of cake in a wonderful 30s style cafe called Cafe Bertorelli, which was facing the beach. I'll definitely be returning for another walk here.
