Stories of Home

We spent much of today looking towards some inspirational teachers to help us agree our direction of travel for the next few months.  We have always had our long term plans in place-but today was about looking at what we want to do now and in the near future. Working on what stops people taking part came out on top, and home life can help but also hinder progress.

During the morning I heard someone behind me read aloud from one of the texts we were reading, ‘When it comes to developing character strength, inner security and unique personal and interpersonal talents and skills in a child, no institution can or ever will compare with, or effectively substitute for, the home's potential for positive influence’ a quote from American author Stephen Covey.

We talked about the influence that our family and friends have on our lives and about some of the difficult experiences some of our learners had had at home when they were children-especially on some of the reasons they found it difficult to get the most out of their education.

Betty told us about the daily feeling of dread of being thought of as stupid and being left behind.  She remembered she became disruptive and just fooled around to cover up the fact she couldn't read well.  As it turned out she has a sight problem and couldn’t read the board-but it took her until adulthood to find someone who could help her recover from her earlier ordeal.  She read us a great quote which we hope will inspire others to keep trying.

I believe that being successful means having a balance of success stories across the many areas of your life.   Zig Ziglar
