My alternative diary

Freedom of the City of London

An exciting day today; a letter arrived from No.1 son. Now that’s an event of note in itself but contained with the letter was this little pouch (about 3” x 2“) and inside was a folded piece what I think is vellum or parchment. He and I had a conversation a few months ago when I asked him if he remembered choosing a “Freedom” note from my father’s effects when he died. It referred to my Dad’s grandfather. I’d remembered this as part of my research into our family history.
No. 1 son had some vague memory of an item but couldn't remember what it was or where he’d “stored” it and promised to have a search. His Christmas card contained a note along with his wishes that said he’d located the “Freedom” item and would send in a separate envelope.

The contents of the pouch is a strip of vellum/parchment 3” x 15” hand written (copper plate) and with red wax seal. I'm intending to have it scanned in order to have copies for other family members. At the moment it is under gentle weight to try and ease the creasing. I only have an A4 scanner so will have to get it done commercially.
