Awesome.
This is our largest Totara tree. Known as the Pouakani totara it is 39.8 metres high, has a girth of 11.43 metres and is estimated to be 1800 years old. Totaras are a conifer and were highly regarded by Maori people as they are easy to carve and so were excellent for making canoes. Wood turners still like this wood which is a lovely reddish colour as well as being easy to work with. It was quite amazing to stand beneath this ancient giant.
