Moores Creek
We are lucky to have Fort Fisher, which was the last stronghold of the Civil War, and Moores Creek, a defining Revolutionary battle, both close by.
Today we went and spent the afternoon at Moores Creek Battlefield. The battle took place on February 26th 1776. The Patriots removed most of the planks from the bridge and soft soaped and tarred the trusses. After the Loyalists finally managed to cross the bridge they were fired upon by the Patriots who had built earthen embankments and had a canon and swivel gun, whereas the Loyalists mainly had broadswords.
The battle lasted approx. 3 minutes. Over 50 Loyalists killed and only 1 Patriot was killed. Moores Creek bridge was part of Negro Head Point Road which was the main road between Wilmington & Fayetteville.
I enjoy going to Moores Creek as there are very interesting trees to take pictures of.
