The Edge of the Wold

Morning flight

There was a cloud inversion at first light and the top of Arnside Knott was above the cloud.  We watched the sun rise over a distant ridge, its intensity attenuated by mist.  There were small flights of gulls coming in off Morecambe Bay and flying high heading inland.  Is this how the evening flight of gulls down the Kent estuary is reversed in the mornings?

Usually, I would expect a cloud inversion to burn off as the sun rose, but instead today the cloud gathered through the morning into a thick grey clammy fog.  At lunchtime even the top of the Knott was consumed and muffled by it.  We didn't see the sun all day from shortly after dawn.
