Which Pump?

DO you  always pull up at a petrol station with your fuel cap nearest to the pump?  As it happens I do.
But I have to admit that it was not until a day or two ago that I learned there was a tell-tale sign on my dashboard staring me in the face all along.
For many years I very frequently drove many different cars, and there is no standard pattern as to which side of the car the filler cap is located.  That is so long ago now, I really do not know whether that simple indicator was there all along.
But I rather think not, because it appears that it is not until relatively recently that motor manufacturers have been adopting this simple dashboard indicator.
It’s on the fuel gauge  — a small arrow alongside the fuel pump icon which points left or right, whichever side the filler cap is.  The mildly distressing thing is that although I have driven the same breed and successive versions of the same model of car for around ten years, I never realised that indicator was there, or at least what it signified.
And to think back to the time when I was often behind the wheel of different cars, just how useful such knowledge would have been. At least if that simple pointer icon existed then or had been widely adopted.

Certainly no-one has ever explained to me the value of this hidden gem. I happened to pick it up during a radio interview while driving home a couple of days ago.
