Swimming with the birds

It was good to get down to the Kumaras area late this afternoon where the sea breeze blew fresh air in to my lungs after sitting at the hospital most of the morning with my sister who was being assessed for a hip operation.
The tides are small at the moment but there was still enough water for these two kids to have a swim right next to a large flock of birds. The birds didn't shift much to my surprise. I was too far away to tell what bird it is-seagulls or terns?
There were a few white tops on the waves and that is Nelson in the distance about 25km as the crow flies but by road is more like 50km.
