Bamse
Montrose is an Angus town full of rich history. A hotbed of Jacobite sentiment in times past, the Old Pretender left our shores for exile from it’s harbour in the early 17th century and the new Scottish Renaissance began here in the 1920’s with the likes of Hugh MacDairmid, Violet Jacob, Compton McKenzie and Neil Gunn flocking to the place to discus a new way forward for Scottish arts and letters. The town is awash with art and sculpture including that of the Rodin inspired William Lamb.
This image is of a Norwegian dog by the name of Bamse who was locally thought to have stolen some sausages from a Montrose butchers shop. The dog died of heart failure in July 1944 seemingly and his statue now stands beside the docks.
