Turns out it was the bearings after all.  Don't know why, but they must have taken so amount of beating as they sounded awful.

I've had a hankering over the past week or so, possibly because of the dry weather, to get out proper skating.  I've been down our wee local park a couple of times but nothing beats the feeling of a full size skatepark to glide around at full pelt.

The bearing clean worked brilliantly, no squelchy sound just fast flowing, gliding motion.

This is slightly related to this picture because the thing they are jumping off would make a superb wee street skating obstacle.
