The Frangipani Hornworm
Saw a few of these today and wondered what on earth they were. They are enormous and present a quite intimidating site, however they are just caterpillars and having looked them up I can confidently say that they are called `Pseudosphinx tetrio' and are a species of moth in the Sphingidae family.
They have a few common names including the frangipani hornworm, which I think is the best fit. They apparently strip frangipani trees of their foliage at a lightening speed and given their size I'm not surprised.
