Kilnsey Crag
Today's the day .......................... to climb
We passed through the little village of Kilnsey today, the most notable feature of which is a large limestone cliff called Kilnsey Crag. The Crag is around 170 feet high, with an overhang of 40 feet and it overlooks the road and the River Wharfe from the west. Along with Goredale Scar and Malham Cove, which featured yesterday, Kilnsey Crag is one of Yorkshire's 'Big Three' for those who seek out seemingly impossible places to climb up.
Believe it or not there are actually 219 different ascents with names like The Directissima, Frankie Comes to Kilnsey, Dominatrix and The Ashes which have all been described and graded. The most difficult one involves climbing up the Kilnsey Main Overhang - that bit that sticks out horizontally like a furrowed brow. Somebody described it as being a route which was ..........'uncomfortable and adventurous, excellent for exhibitionists'.
Quite frankly - in my opinion - it doesn't bear thinking about ....................
