Give Ale Cottage, Fordwich
Fordwich is the smallest town in Britain, it's actually only the size of a small village. When Canterbury Cathedral was being built (C12), the sea extended as far as Canterbury and Fordwich was the highest navigable point. Caen stone for the Cathedral was unloaded here using the town crane, together with ships supplying coal and timber, Fordwich did very well for itself by charging port fees. By the early nineteenth century, the channel, now the river Stour had silted up, Fordwich's hey day was over.
Give Ale cottage dates in part from 1300, with additions in 1670. The name suggests an inn, but there was a communal buiding by the same name closer to the Town Hall.
