On tenterhooks
As we emerged from Sheila and Will’s house this morning, a few moments of sun lit up the wonderful outlook they have. Here are our bags going down to the car after a lovely evening and excellent breakfast.
The area of green here has been retained from what used to be 'tenter' or drying fields where, in the early days of the wool industry, wool was stretched and dried on frames held on by hooks. Hence: on tenterhooks – feeling tense.
The moments of sun did not last - we've had rain and sleet and snow since then.
