Future of classical music?
Is this the future? children running around with their smartphones filming during classical concerts?
Now purists will faint at this but classical concerts have to change if they are to attract a younger audience so I am full of admiration for conductor Stephen Broad’s brave experiment this afternoon with a family concert given by Stirling Orchestra. ..
And the child with the smartphone was the least obtrusive among the cacophony of noises from toddlers running around which threatened at some stage to drown out the music.
Fortunately the orchestra played some very loud and very popular classical pieces – Mars from Holst’s the Planet Suite, Russian dances from Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker and Pirates of the Caribbean from Klaus Badelt’s medley so the whole event had something of a party atmosphere.
In fact this was encouraged by the conductor who announced at the start if children felt like getting up and dancing- they did- or walking around- they did- or talking when they felt like it –they did -then that was fine by him.
For this young conductor encourages the breaking down of the barriers around classical music. It helps that he himself has young children and works with schools introducing them to music so he was totally unfazed by the racket he had unleashed on us, the unsuspecting audience, as his orchestra struggled to compete with the exuberance of small children unaccustomed to sitting still for an hour.
As for the wee laddie with the smartphone he melted into the background.
Happy St David’s Day!
