Through a fern dimly

When your head is hard down and you’re hoeing and hacking away, even if the camera’s nearby, you miss a lot of blip opportunities.  So I had a quick wander late in the afternoon to see what I could find. The camera was on the wrong setting, so the shots of a very excited dog gyrating round the lawn are a bit too blurred. Then the landscapes were all rather boring (annoying, since I climbed way up the bank to get them), so these fern tree leaves will have to do.

Today I tackled the weeds and couch grass on the stone around another one-time flower bed, with the occasional incursion into the bed itself, because it was in the shade.  Once that disappeared I opted for a chair and a book on the verandah, an unaccustomed luxury, and spent a delightful hour re-reading Tom Avery’s book Pole Dance, the account of his expedition to the Antarctic. Tom’s the son of old friends who lived in Rio for a while and we remember him as a boy of 10, who was a wiz with Lego. He’s covered an awful lot of ground and had an exciting life since then, with mountaineering and expeditions to many parts of the globe.

And now to settle down for a few episodes of Downton Abbey. I bought the boxed set, having missed everything except a few episodes of the third season.
