Scrawny Old Man

Are you sitting comfortably?

The highlight of my time in Ghana was a trip to the village of Bumbong No.1 (yes, really) to visit the church that has recently been started there.
It was 90 minutes drive from Nalerigu, mostly on quite good dirt roads but the last part was a rough and narrow path and included crossing a dry river bed. But the pickup got us there.
There's no electricity or running water (but I did drink the borehole water when we ran out of drinking water and it was fine), the children were in rags - but there is a school. And a moblie phone signal. The people are lovely and gave us great hospitality. The local rice and guinea fowl was probably the best meal I had in Ghana.
Here's Mina, one of the church leaders in Nalerigu (on Sunday she taught the all-age Sunday school, led the praise and worship and the singing group, and translated my sermon - as she has ever since my first visit, when she was still at school).
She's sitting on one of the benches in the church building/ structure/ shelter. This kind of shelter isn't unusual in village churches but even my Ghanaian friends had never seen benches like that before. Actually they were quite comfy - for a minute or two. The floor's pretty good too, isn't it?
In the evening we had a service - outside the shelter, far too many people came to fit inside. I preached and that was an experience in itself. The people here belong to the Konkomba tribe with a different language from the Mamprusi (people - the language is Mampruli) in Nalerigu. The young leader of the Bumbong church translated me, but struggled with my British accent so sometimes Isaiah or Mina had to translate what I said into Mampruli which he then translated into Konkomba. But still - the word of God was heard and people responded.
After all that we slept in the open courtyard of one of the houses, under the stars - had to make myself shut my eyes and go to sleep, not just look at the stars all night. The temperature was comfortably warm and there was no problem with insects, though I did find a stick insect on my knee earlier when I was tucking into the guinea fowl.
