This wonderful derelict building was a house and Smithy, in the district of Crochar on the South east of the village of Culbokie. I've managed to find out some info about it but feel free to skip the next bit if you're not interested.
' It is composed of patches of arable heathy pasture and whins and few crofters houses. These dwellings , a smithy and two dwelling houses are all one storey high thatched and in middling repair and the property of a Captain James D. McKenzie.( info from Scotland Places with the date, as far as I can work out, as 1868-69.)
From the Highland Historic Environment Record information says that Both the house and Smithy date from the 19th Century. There is a roofed building appearing on the first ordnance Survey of 1880 as Smithy and on the 2nd edition of 1907. 2 buildings can be seen from an aerial photo of 1946.
A walkover survey in 2003 'revealed a site derelict , but still roofed buildings The range to the east is constructed of rubble sandstone with a corrugated -iron roof divided into 3 buildings aligned north-south, all heavily overgrown. The building to the West is ' the same ' with blocked in windows and 2 doors- one blocked up and it is likely that this building is the former smithy.' ' The third building to the South was a wooden shed with a corrugated-iron roof.
It appears that an application has gone in for the buildings to be demolished and house, garage and poolhouse to be put in it's place so there may not be many more opportunities to take photos of it so here we are a derelict building on Friday.
The wind is picking up so do nt think I'll get much sleep tonight.
