Caird's Cave
It was such a lovey day that we had to go for a walk on the Beach. We walked down to the first cave known as Caird's Cave. It is also known aas Travellers' Cave , one of 19 cave's between Rosemarkie and Cromarty.
It has been excavated a few times and the latest one in 2010 discovered that the base of the Cave dates from 300BC and earlier bones discovered by Dr William Maclean , a GP for Fortrose and Rosemarkie ,date back to 700-600AD.
It is situated on a 5m high raised beach below old redstone cliffs. Above the entrance a scruffy Ravens nest can be seen. I saw one fly off and we also saw the two peregrines that hunt along the cliffs.
The cave is nt very deep but it has been lived in as recently as the beginning of the 19th Century.
We managed to get back to the car before a downpour.
